Wearing Face Masks

• all staff are required to wear a medical/procedural mask and a face shield/goggles
• all students in Grades 4-12 must wear a mask (cloth recommended) in school and on the
school bus
• all students in Grades K-3 are encouraged to wear a mask (cloth recommended); students in
Grade 3 who are in a combined Gr. 3/4 class are strongly encouraged to wear a mask (cloth)
• masks are not required outdoors, during recesses or breaks and staff are encouraged to take
students outside as part their class learning opportunities.
On Friday, August 14th, we learned that the Ministry of Education is not making masks available for students (as previously indicated in the Guide to Reopening Ontario’s Schools), but rather is providing a small supply as back up for School Boards, and that parents are expected to provide a mask for their children. To support families, the Algoma District School Board has been able to source some cloth masks for students and will provide 2 cloth masks per student in September and an additional 3 masks when we receive our next shipment. We do need parents to ensure that masks are cleaned daily and that children arrive each day with a clean mask.
As students can remove the mask while outdoors, the following information with respect to removing and storing a non-medical mask is provided by Public Health Services Canada:
How to remove a non-medical mask or face covering:
1. Wash your hands with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds.
o If none is available, use hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol.
2. Remove the face covering by un-tying it or removing the loops from your ears.
o Avoid touching the front of the mask when removing it.
3. Store the face covering in a paper bag, envelope, or something that does not retain moisture if
you will be wearing it again.
4. After removing the face covering, wash your hands or use hand sanitizer.
